# Directions:

01 - Boil penne pasta in a large pot of salted water until al dente as per package directions. Reserve 1/2 cup pasta water, then drain pasta.
02 - Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add Italian sausage, breaking it apart with a spoon, and cook until browned, approximately 4 minutes.
03 - Add chopped onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 2 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
04 - Pour in crushed tomatoes, dried Italian herbs, and optional red pepper flakes. Simmer for 3 minutes.
05 - Reduce heat to low and stir in heavy cream. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Let sauce simmer gently for 2 minutes.
06 - Add drained pasta to the sauce and toss to coat evenly. Use reserved pasta water to loosen the sauce if necessary.
07 - Stir in grated Parmesan cheese, adjust seasoning as needed, and serve immediately garnished with fresh basil or parsley.
