Juicy beef, sweet onions, and gooey cheese packed in crisp, golden bread. A crowd-pleasing comfort classic.
# Components:
→ Beef
01 - 1 pound ground beef
02 - 1 teaspoon salt
03 - 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
04 - 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
→ Vegetables
05 - 2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
06 - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, for onions
→ Bread & Dairy
07 - 8 slices rye bread
08 - 8 slices Swiss cheese or cheddar cheese
09 - 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened, for bread
→ Condiments
10 - 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (optional)
11 - 2 teaspoons yellow mustard or Dijon mustard (optional)
# Directions:
01 - In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Divide and shape into 4 thin patties, each sized to match the bread slices.
02 - In a skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring regularly, for 10 to 12 minutes until deeply golden and caramelized. Remove onions and set aside.
03 - Using the same skillet, raise heat to medium-high and cook the beef patties for 3 to 4 minutes per side, until well-browned and cooked through. Transfer to a plate.
04 - Spread softened butter on one side of each bread slice. Place 4 slices, buttered side down, on a work surface. Layer with one slice of cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese. Top with remaining bread slices, buttered side up.
05 - Preheat a clean skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add sandwiches and cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side, gently pressing, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted.
06 - Slice sandwiches in half and serve hot. Spread mayonnaise or mustard inside the sandwich before grilling if desired.
